Hanging drop stool test used to observe motile trophozoites of protozoa such as Giardia and other motile organisms for rapid microscopic diagnosis.
Pretest:
Sample must be fresh because motile trophozoites lose motility rapidly. Do not refrigerate if immediate examination is planned. Avoid contamination with urine or water. Best results obtained when sample is delivered within 30 minutes of collection. Inform lab of recent antiparasitic medication.
