Total PSA is a blood test used to evaluate prostate health and aid in the early detection of prostate cancer, benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), or prostatitis.
Pretest:
Avoid ejaculation for 24–48 hours before sample collection. Avoid testing for at least 6 weeks after prostate biopsy, cystoscopy, urethral instrumentation, or prostate massage. Inform the lab if the patient is taking medications like finasteride or dutasteride, as they can lower PSA levels. Levels may be influenced by prostate infections or inflammation.
