Peripheral Blood Smear (PBS) test is a microscopic examination of a stained blood film used to evaluate the morphology of red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. It helps in diagnosing anemia, infections, blood cancers, and other hematological disorders.
Pretest:
1. No fasting required — you can eat and drink normally unless your doctor has ordered other fasting blood tests together. 2. Inform your doctor/lab if you are currently taking any medications, especially iron supplements, chemotherapy drugs, or steroids, as these can affect blood cell morphology. 3. Avoid vigorous exercise or dehydration before blood collection; both can temporarily alter blood cell appearance. 4. If you have had a recent blood transfusion, inform the lab — this may influence the results.
