A blood test measuring gamma-glutamyl transferase enzyme levels, primarily used to assess liver function, detect liver disease, bile duct obstruction, and monitor alcohol-related liver injury.
Pretest:
Fasting not required (but some labs recommend avoiding alcohol 24 hours prior). Inform the lab if taking medications that may affect GGT levels (e.g., anticonvulsants, antibiotics). Inform lab if receiving piperacillin-tazobactam or other antibiotics that may rarely cause false positives. Blood is usually collected via venipuncture into a plain or serum-separating tube (SST).
