The Bilirubin – Direct test measures the level of conjugated bilirubin in the blood. It helps evaluate liver function, detect bile duct obstruction, and differentiate between hepatic and post-hepatic jaundice. Elevated direct bilirubin levels indicate problems in bile excretion or hepatocellular damage.

Pretest:

Fasting (8–10 hours) is preferred for accuracy. Avoid alcohol and high-fat meals 24 hours before testing. Inform your clinician if you are taking hepatotoxic drugs, as these may alter results.
