The Bicarbonate – Serum test measures the level of bicarbonate (HCO₃⁻) in the blood to evaluate acid-base balance and metabolic function. It is used to help diagnose and monitor metabolic acidosis, metabolic alkalosis, kidney disorders, lung diseases, and electrolyte imbalances.
Pretest:
No fasting required. Avoid prolonged tourniquet use during blood collection. Inform your clinician if you have respiratory illness, renal disease, or are on diuretics or antacids, as these can affect results. Often performed as part of an electrolyte panel or arterial blood gas (ABG) evaluation.
