The Free Beta-hCG test measures the unbound (free) beta subunit of human chorionic gonadotropin in the blood. It is primarily used in prenatal screening to detect the risk of chromosomal abnormalities such as Down syndrome (Trisomy 21) and Trisomy 18, and sometimes as a tumor marker for germ cell or trophoblastic tumors.




Pretest:

No fasting required. Best performed between 10–14 weeks of pregnancy as part of first-trimester screening (along with PAPP-A and NT scan). Inform your clinician if you are pregnant or undergoing prenatal screening. Avoid hemolyzed or lipemic samples. Used in oncology settings for evaluating trophoblastic or germ cell tumors.
