The Aspartate Aminotransferase (AST / SGOT) test measures the level of AST enzyme in the blood, which is released from the liver, heart, and muscles. It is used to evaluate liver function, detect liver injury, and monitor liver diseases such as hepatitis or cirrhosis.
Pretest:
Fasting for 8–12 hours is preferred but not mandatory. Avoid alcohol and strenuous exercise for at least 24 hours before testing. Inform your clinician about any medications (especially statins, pain relievers, or antibiotics) that may affect liver function. Often performed as part of a Liver Function Test (LFT) panel.
