Alanine Aminotransferase (ALT / SGPT) test measures the level of ALT enzyme in the blood, which is primarily found in the liver. It helps evaluate liver health and diagnose liver damage, hepatitis, or effects of medications on the liver.

Pretest:

Fasting: Fasting for 8–10 hours is recommended for accurate results. Avoid alcohol, fatty foods, and strenuous exercise for 24 hours before the test. Inform your doctor/lab about any medications, especially statins, antibiotics, or antiepileptics, as they may affect liver enzymes. Test is usually done in the morning for consistency in enzyme levels.
